Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has the knowledge and skills to treat mental health disorders such as schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, dementia, and others.

The main treatment method used by psychiatrists is medication.

Psychiatric treatment can take place either outpatient (ambulatory) or inpatient (hospital) settings, depending on the severity and nature of the mental health issue. This differs from psychotherapy, which, in many countries, including Latvia, typically occurs only in outpatient settings.

If necessary, to clarify the diagnosis, the psychiatrist may refer the patient to other specialists such as a neurologist, geneticist, or psychologist.

What happens during the visit?

During the visit, it is determined what is troubling the patient and what difficulties they are currently experiencing. The psychiatrist will ask about early development, any past illnesses, and the patient's time in kindergarten and school.

During the conversation, the psychiatrist determines what is needed for the patient – whether additional tests, medication therapy, or psychotherapy are required.

When to see a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist should be consulted if there are:

  • Mood disorders

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep disorders

  • Obsessive thoughts and behaviors

  • Eating disorders

  • Anger outbursts
