A narcologist is a doctor who specializes in the prevention and treatment of addictions. Due to various prejudices and shame, patients often seek help from a doctor too late. It is important to note that addiction does not mean that a person is "weak" or "bad" – it is a chronic disease with various biopsychosocial causes. Treatment is based on the principle of voluntariness.

What happens during the visit?

During the visit, the patient's difficulties, personality traits, and an appropriate treatment plan are determined. If the patient agrees to treatment, it is primarily carried out with medication, but psychotherapy is often recommended as well. If necessary, the patient may be referred for additional tests or recommended to undergo inpatient treatment.

When to see a narcologist?

A narcologist should be consulted if there is:

  • Excessive alcohol use or addiction
  • Use of narcotic or psychotropic substances
  • Nicotine addiction
  • Process addictions (gambling, video games, etc.)
  • Codependency (consultation for family members of the addicted patient)
